An Unique War of Sexes

Image hosted by

There is an article published by Nature a few months ago, which shows some interesting findings on war of sexes between male and female fire ants.

In human, the male gametes or sperm cells are heterogametic and contain one of two types of sex chromosomes. They are either X or Y. The female gametes or eggs however, contain only the X sex chromosome and are homogametic. The sperm cell determines the sex of an individual in this case. If a sperm cell containing an X chromosome fertilizes an egg, the resulting zygote will be XX or female. If the sperm cell contains a Y chromosome, then the resulting zygote will be XY or male. (XX = female; XY = male)

Image hosted by Photobucket.comThe fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, which is native to Central and South America but has spread into the US and beyond, has opted for a unique stand-off in the battle of the sexes.

Queens produce queens by cloning (female gametes only).
Male + female gametes = Workers, which cannot reproduce.
Male gametes destroy female gametes in eggs = Male (male gametes only).

In other word, the result potentially suggests that reproductive female and male as two separated species.  However, more researches are needed before we can see them as two separated species.  Source: Newscientist, Nature

XD
